Happy New Year 2014 - This year a recent cold snap left many/most of the usual watering holes frozen solid. With an overnight low temperature reaching down to -7, and daytime high being 9 degrees Fahrenheit, only water that was moving remained liquid. Waterfowl like these Red Heads rely on water to reach food they need to survive the winter.
January 3, 2014 was a rather slow day. At seven degrees Fahrenheit, waterfowl that had found water were content floating in the "warm" water, and basking in the sun! Needless to say, it was a slow day, but here are a few that I kept!
Mallards on a Spring
Small running spring pond on the side of a road full of green heads!
Mute Swans in Flight
Mutes are much larger than they appear!
Courting Bald Eagles
High Altitude, but you don't see this everyday.
